Timo Tembuyser

MISSA MAMA NOVA

MISSA MAMA NOVA changes the tradition of the Holy Mass with discriminating norms from within. A choral concert on femininity with chants and sermons, broken down with dance and movement. A Mass for healing and celebration.

A dancer wriggles in and out of the norm of woman as mother while a choir of six sons roams around her. In the absence of the Father, they break free from patriarchal Christian traditions and search for their own adult voices. A flutist breathes and directs the multi-voiced body of performers. MISSA MAMA NOVA is a reworking for theatre of Timo's earlier work MISSA MATER SOLA with new material and new cast.

Singer, performer, composer and theatre-maker: Belgian-Dutch Timo Tembuyser is skilled in a multitude of disciplines. In his work, he strives to create space for honest listening. In his polyphonic musical pieces, the different voices attempt to weave themselves equally in and out of harmony, in and out of conflict, in and out of silence. The desire for connection is deeply rooted in Timo's practice. The search for honesty and harmony began as a child of divorced parents and as a young gay man in a Catholic school. Like an eternal nomad, he travelled from home to home, project to project, school to school.

After bachelor and master's degrees in Architecture & Urban Planning (2014), Timo went to the Toneelacademie in Maastricht where he trained as a versatile performer and maker (2019). His work is musical and personal, colourful and meditative, philosophical and playful.

He has previously appeared at Cement with the works MEMENTUM, LA LOBA and MISSA MATER SOLA.
