Dag Dramaturgie

Our annual meeting programme for dramaturgists and student dramaturgists that focuses on the renewal of dramaturgical practice: Day of Dramaturgy. On 20 March, this day responds to the need to talk through with colleagues about current questions, methodologies, proposals and themes that concern dramaturgists. Concluding the day's programme, we will visit Sunni Lamin Barrow's performance A Fist of Tongues together at 17:00.

PROGRAM 20 MARCH 2024 - ENGLISH SPOKEN

13:00 - 13:15 Walk-in, coffee

13:15 - 13:30 Introduction and overview of the day

13.30 - 14:15 TALK:
Aesthetics and Necropolitics: Dramaturgical Agency in the 2020s, by Dr. Eylül Fidan Akıncı
The title of this talk refers to the book Aesthetics and Politics (1977), a milestone debate on the dynamics and function of representation and reality in (Marxist) revolution. I propose to use this extended conversation between four philosophers and a theater maker as an inspiration to formulate some dramaturgical questions for us. For us, millennials and Gen-Z who live in equally unpredictable times with unprecedented means, who have concurrent reckonings with coloniality, neofeudalism, planetwide ecocide, genocidal wars, and extreme virtualization of the public sphere. What are the imperatives and impacts of rethinking aesthetics in performance today? How can we make our dramaturgies more capacious? How can we generate creative forms of political agency on stage in the face of state-sanctioned coercions over humans and nonhumans? Expect less of a lecture, more of a puzzling together.

14:15 - 14:30 Q & A

14:30 - 14:45 BREAK

14:45 - 15:30 JANUS SÉANCE with Judith Blankenberg & Eylül Fidan Akıncı:
Dramaturg, programmer, and researcher Judith Blankenberg will join Eylul for a dialogue reflecting on their dramaturgical practice through (some surprise) questions: How and where did we learn what we do? What were the turning points and surprise discoveries? How do we define our craft from today? What are our secret wishes for our prospective collaborators? Drawing from our personal journeys across countries and contexts, we are here to convince you that dramaturgs are a hilarious species.

15:30 - 15:45 Q & A

15:45 - 16:00 BREAK

16:00 - 16:30 WORKSHOP with Judith Blankenberg & Eylül Fidan Akıncı:
This workshop segways from Judith’s and Eylul’s dialogue to leading the participants toward reflecting on or imagining their own collaborations with/as a dramaturg. How do you find the right interlocutor? In fact, even before that: How do you form your own questions around a performance to come? No, actually: How do you pose a good question? What answers are you willing to let go of? How to endure the ineffable? How do you communicate your needs and peeves–as irrational as they might get? How can you make the best of a job that is “thinking no-one’s thought”?

16:30 - 16:40 CLOSING

17.00 PERFORMANCE:
SUNNI LAMIN BARROW - A fist of Tongues, grote zaal Verkadefabriek Den Bosch.
